 ‘THE FAMOUS ONES’
My name is Jessica McDonald-Agu. I am studying BA (Hons) Journalism in DBS in Ireland. And the title of my project is ‘THE FAMOUS ONES’.
I came to Ireland in my teens from Nigeria which is in the west of Africa.
I come from a country where majority of the population live in severe poverty. This has decreased the people’s mind of appreciating art. The main arts and statues are only limited to tourist attractions which lay in the heart of a State called Cross-River.
In Ireland art is shared for free, there is an opportunity to see, absorb and indulge in its beauty.
With these observations I have realized that the most important arts judging from history are statues.
Statues are like billboards that last forever. The strength that a statue portrays is equivalent to the power of a constitution and every main city in all powerful countries has statues that identify them.
A statue is a visual Passport but rather than carry it with you, you take its memories with you and a description of it would immediately signal what city it is located in but it now seems that people are becoming unappreciative of them.
People tend to walk past these statues forgetting that they were one of the first clues that sculptured art existed way before we thought.
The ancient Greeks used statues as forms of gods and demi-gods for this reason I have chosen to proof this theory by taking photographs of them.
I would like to show the way people have ignored the beauty and power of statues.
I would be taking photographs of famous statues in Dublin because I believe the best sculptures are situated in a main city.
I will be starting from the famous O’Connell Street’s spire and the statue of father Mathew (the apostle) erects.
I am going to take pictures of only the famous ones. I would like to incorporate different seasonal aspects to my photographs so I would capture each of these statues in different conditions of the weather.
I don’t want them to look too perfect because, life is not perfect, I want them to blend in with the people as they stroll, walk or run past them.
I will be concentrating on the statues located in the inner parts of Dublin city which will be places around the O’connell Street. This would include alley-ways and main streets.
O’connell Street can be defined as the heart of the administrative and commercial capital of Ireland.  It is also the part of Dublin that is mostly populated with tourist and inhabitants of Ireland.
I will begin my project after Christmas when all the decorations and flattery of season will be taken off.
The weather and the period after Christmas have a dull natural lighting that is neutral.
It is balanced which will give me a chance to capture a natural scene.
I will be using a digital camera with approximately 2megapixels and an optical lens zoom.
I will be capturing the public around these statues especially passer-bys so my images will be taken in full with ISO set to approximately 200. Will use both medium slow and fast shutter speed of the same of each photographs because, i would want to tell different parts of the same story.
